Since 2015, Alfred Kilama has worked at Lacor Hospital as an IT Officer. He takes care of the network administration, help desk, and the daily repair and maintenance of the IT systems. Alfred was born in Gulu district and earned a diploma in Computer Science from Kampala International University in 2005. After receiving his diploma, he worked for Caritas Gulu Archdiocese and then for Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach (BOSCO Uganda), where his job consisted of connecting wireless Internet and teaching computer literacy within the IDP camps. During this time, Alfred enrolled at Gulu University for a Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology; he graduated in 2013.
Alfred is passionate about serving the community of his birth and contributing to the Lacor Hospital’s vision and mission. He says that since the hospital data increases every year, there is a need for an offsite/cloud backup plan to handle routine automatic storage and recovery of data safety in cases of data losses or disaster. There are also other important needs, like setting up a meshed fibre network within the hospital to maintain constant data access to the servers, establishing a dedicated Virtual Private Network (VPN) to the hospital’s three health centres (Opit, Pabbo and Amuru) for unified real-time patient management, and installing a backup Internet connection in case the existing one goes down. Alfred and the IT staff require skills training to keep the hospital up-to-date with constant changes in technology.
